Sony launches A68 DSLR camera at Rs 55,990

Sony continues to churn out cameras. Although, this time it has launched a camera that is sort of a surprise. The company has launched A68 camera in India at a price of Rs 55,990 (body only). The same camera with the 18-55mm lens costs Rs 59,990 and with the 18-135mm lens carries a price tag of Rs 85,990.

Unlike the A6000 series cameras, which are mirrorless, the A68 uses a translucent mirror. This makes it bigger and similar to DSLR cameras sold by Nikon and Canon. It also makes it a surprising addition to Sony's camera line-up because of late Sony is focussing on mirrorless cameras and the E mount lenses. In contrast, the A68 uses A-mount lenses.

Sony says that the A68 inherits many features from A77M2 and has Sony's unique 4D focus system "delivering extraordinary AF performance under any shooting conditions ranging from lighting as low as EV-2".

The A68 has 79 autofocus detection points, including 15 cross points and a dedicated F2.8 AF sensor point for low light photography. The camera uses a 24-megapixel image sensor and offers shooting speed of 8 frames per second.

The camera has an OLED viewfinder with 100 per cent frame coverage. It comes with a 2.7-inch LCD monitor that can be tilted up to 135 degrees upwards or 55 degrees downwards.

While the A68 looks interesting, it faces some strong competition from Nikon and Canon. The main problem for the A68 is not its feature set or capabilities. It's main problem is Sony's directionless lens strategy. There is no clarity from the company if it wants to go forward with the A-Mount lenses or if it wants to focus on E-Mount. This also means that Nikon and Canon offer a better set of lenses to go along with their DSLR cameras compared to Sony's line-up.
