Canon Debuts New Flagship Speedlite, First Macro for Mirrorless System

While mirrorless cameras are experiencing sales growth, Canon's EOS M-series hasn't caught on as well as Canon DSLRs, at least stateside. The Speedlite 600EX-RT II has some streamlined operations, including easier to use wireless, plus improved dust-and-splash resistance.

Canon has unveiled a new lens that is aimed at those who like to take macro photography shots and wants to be sure that their images are well lit. When taking photos close up sometimes a traditional flash doesn't do the job of lighting your subject well.

The flash goes on sale in June, with an MSRP of $580.

The Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT is the company's flagship flash, offering speedier recycling times than its predecessor.

Another new optional accessory is a set of hard, clip-on type color filters in place of the easily-damaged flexible gels and holder used previously. This helps illuminate what you're shooting close-up, and also helps in freezing movement, enhancing color accuracy, and providing a better sense of depth and dimension, according to Canon. You'll get a 1.1 and 1.5 times faster recycling continuous flash shooting with AA batteries and up to 2 times faster when adding the new Compact Battery Pack (CP-E4N, sold separately). Two curved flash units surround the front element of the lens, with the ability to illuminate both simultaneously, or one at a time.

Photographers looking for a compact, lightweight macro lens should look no further than the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens, the first Canon Macro Lens specifically designed for the EOS M Camera System. The EF-M 28mm, however, gets around that with a built-in mini ring flash that features two user-controllable "Macro Lites".

The lens has a Super Macro Mode that lets users shoot at higher magnifications of up to 1.2 times. Bringing you closer to subjects and helping you capture intricacy and magnifying minute detail, it can focus up to 13mm.

The Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT electronic flash unit is scheduled to be available through authorized Canon dealers in June 2016 for an estimated retail price of $579.991.

The EF-M 28mm is available for preorder now for $300.
