This is bizarre: two photographers in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, have been charged by police with smashing the glass at 70 bus stops around the city -- locations they had been photographing for a photo book.

Almost everything I do as a photographer comes back to this challenge: seeing light as a cinematographer would on set. I was recently reminded of this in conversation with a friend and fellow photographer as I was trying to think of the best advice I could give to someone wanting to step up their lighting game. So I'm sharing one of my lighting journals from film school, it was my sort of "ah ha" moment after several semesters of confusion and frustration when it came to lighting.
Between the 1950s and 1980s, large-scale residential districts were built in and around Paris, France, to provide affordable housing for a booming population. Known as "grands ensembles," these sprawling complexes were sometimes poorly planned and constructed, causing some to have many empty units as residents found other places to live. Others, however, remain populated and are bustling with life. In both cases, there are senior citizens who call the housing projects home. For his project Souvenir d'un Futur, photographer Laurent Kronental documented these strangely beautiful buildings and the seniors who live in them.
What do you think of when you hear the words "light painting"? Colorful and squiggly lines over a dark background? An explosion of glowing sparks? Did you know that you can also add photo-realistic images to your long-exposure photos by painting them in with light?
As a product photographer, I've always had a problem with finding what to use as a background. Even more so when I need to go to my client to shoot their products. Before, I was limited to shooting on a black granite tile. Then I added some do-it-yourself wood planks into my props collection, but carrying the wood planks was a big problem, as they were too heavy and I could only limit myself to about 2 wood planks per shoot.

Over the years I've done a lot of travelling, but I always came back to my home country, the Netherlands. Being completely flat, having no mountains, no rocks, no skyscrapers, no good weather (usually), no super dark skies at night because of light pollution, I always feel a bit down when I come back from "spectacular" countries. But that always goes away quickly. There's a lot to appreciate in the Netherlands. Things that may be normal for us locals have incredible beauty for outsiders. This is the case in each and every country. This is my home in 20 photos, all taken within 1 year.
