FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) has announced that it will release the FUJIFILM X-E3 (hereinafter "X-E3"), the latest addition to the X Series of premium mirrorless digital cameras on September 28th 2017.

The X-E3 features APS-C 24.3 megapixel X-Trans™* CMOS III sensor and the X-Processor Pro high-speed image processing engine. The X-E3 is the first X Series model to feature Bluetooth ®** low energy wireless communication. You can pair the camera with your smartphone or tablet device for easy transfer of pictures taken. The LCD monitor, on the back of the camera, uses a static touchscreen panel which supports the conventional "Touch Shot", "Touch AF" and "Focus Area Selection" capabilities. An all-new "Touch Function" feature will be available on the X-E3, which enables gesture control like flick and pinch zoom, to further enhance touchscreen operation. The AF algorithm has been updated to enhance the camera's performance for tracking a moving subject. The X-E3's premium exterior design, agility and functional beauty make it a mirrorless camera that is "a pleasure to own and fun to shoot with" at the same time.

[1] Compact and lightweight body for portability and practicality

Fujifilm redesigned the camera body of FUJIFILM X-E2, released in November 2013, to create the most compact and lightweight model within the X Series interchangeable lens camera range, with a viewfinder. The form factor makes it a perfect companion for everyday use and travel photography. The well-balanced proportions and the grip-shaped design make the camera comfortable to hold. The new model also supports the Focus Lever, a popular feature first introduced in the FUJIFILM X-Pro2, allowing you to instantaneously change the focus area while keeping eye on the viewfinder.

The top plate of the camera body features two dials, one for shutter speed and the other for exposure compensation. The dials, milled from aluminum, have a high quality appearance and deliver a reassuring click at every notched setting. The exposure compensation dial now has the C position to enable exposure compensation of up to ±5 stops in 1/3 steps, which enhances the basic operability of photography. The X-E3 is also equipped with an Auto mode selector lever for selecting the fully-automatic Advanced SR Auto mode where the camera chooses the optimum settings for a given scene.

[2] Outstanding image quality, high-speed response and upgraded AF tracking performance

The X-E3 features a 24.3 megapixel APS-C sized X-Trans™ CMOS III sensor and X-Processor Pro image processing engine for outstanding image quality and high-speed response. The X-E3 features a large phase detection AF area and an updated algorithm to deliver a fastest AF speed of 0.06sec.***. The X-E3 also offers 5.0fps live-view shooting, a quick start-up time of 0.4sec., a shutter time lag of 0.050sec. and a shooting interval of 0.25sec.*4

Thanks to the newly developed image recognition algorithm, the X-E3 is able to track subjects that are moving at twice the speed compared to the previous models*5. In addition, the X-E3 is also able to track moving subjects of half the size as before.

[3] Enhanced connectivity with Bluetooth® wireless communication

The X-E3 is the first X Series camera that offers Bluetooth® capability. Pair it with your smartphone or tablet device and easily transfer pictures you have taken to the smartphone or tablet device via the smart-device app "FUJIFILM Camera Remote."

[4] Upgraded intuitive touchscreen operation

The LCD monitor uses a high-resolution 1.04M dot, 3.0-inch static touchscreen panel display. The "Touch Panel Settings" on allows the following operations during shooting and playback modes:

Focus Area Selection: Move the focus point to the chosen position by tapping the LCD monitor.

Touch Shot: Touch to focus on a specific point, then take the picture. When you remove your finger from the screen, the camera will take a shot

＜Playback Modes＞

Swipe Movement : Swiping a finger across the screen scrolls through the images, one after the other.

Double-Tap Enlargement: Tapping the screen twice will enlarge the image, centering on the active focus point when the image was taken.

Drag : Moving a finger across the screen when an image is enlarged will move it around the frame.

Pinch out : Placing two fingers on the screen and widening the distance between them enlarges the image.

Pinch in : While the image being displayed is enlarged, placing two fingers on the screen and narrowing the distance between them reduces the image size and ultimately displays the last 9 images.

All the touchscreen functions are disabled when the "Touch Panel Settings" are turned off.

The camera also features the "Touch Function", in which you can use flick motions in up – down and right – left directions to call pre-assigned functions. Use the drag motion on the touchscreen panel, even while keeping your eye on the Electric View Finder (EVF), to change the focus area location. In the EVF TOUCH SCREEN AREA SETTINGS, you can activate touchscreen operation for "ALL", "RIGHT", "LEFT" or turn the functionality "OFF".

[5] High resolution and high definition 4K video recording

The X-E3 is capable of recording both Full HD and 4K video using the X Series' famous Film Simulation modes. You can output recorded video to an external monitor, via the HDMI port, and input audio from an external microphone.

Our XF lens line-up now features 25 lenses, after today's announcement of the FUJINON XF80mmF2.8 R LM OIS WR Macro. According to some unconfirmed reports the car mirror will be replaced with cameras like that of the Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar.

The company chief executive, Andy Palmer says that the finished vehicle contains many of the key design elements of the concept but unlike its concept, the Aston Martin DBX has four doors rather than two.

"There are aspects of the car that have changed dramatically — perhaps none more so than the fact that it is now a four-door — and, on a comparison basis, you will be able to pick out many details that have been modified. But in terms of the pure lines and the fundamental core principles of the car, you'll recognise them," he said.

The DBX is said to be launched in 2019 and it will be initially sold with both the company's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 503 hp and 513 lb-ft of torque and the range-topping twin-turbo 5.2-liter V12 with 600 hp and 516 lb-ft.

Let's start talking about the upcoming Nikon mirrorless camera

I have been reporting about the new Nikon mirrorless camera for over a year now, but I still don't have any reliable technical details. Several different scenarios are possible:

Nikon will bring back the Nikon 1 with a new and better adapter. Maybe they can squeeze a slightly bigger than 1" sensor inside the CX mount?

Nikon will create a new mount for their upcoming mirrorless camera and introduce a new adapter to use existing Nikkor lenses.

Another possibility is that Nikon may introduce two different mirrorless cameras (possible mix: Nikon 1/F-mount/new mount)

Nikon has already filed several patents for full frame mirrorless lenses but I am still not sure what sensor size Nikon will select - all the reports I received point to a "large" or "larger than Nikon 1 sensor". I think it is safe to assume that if they go with a new mount, it will be 100% full frame compatible.

At least two new Nikon mirrorless lenses will be launched with the new mirrorless camera.

The only matching information across all my sources is that Nikon is working on a new adapter for their upcoming mirrorless camera

Reportedly Nikon is putting a lot of effort in the development of a new lens adapter for their next mirrorless camera. The new adapter is supposed to be very complex and it will be expensive. Nikon wants to make sure the autofocus is fast and is backward compatible with old Nikkor lenses (AF-D included).  This brings me to a new Nikon patent that was recently filed in Japan (I have no idea if this is what Nikon is working on):

Nikon patent for pellicle/translucent mirror autofocus adapter to use current Nikkor DSLR lenses on a mirrorless camera

The patent describes a mirrorless camera with a hybrid sensor and an AF adapter with a pellicle (translucent) mirror and a dedicated phase AF module (similar to the current Sony LA-EA4 adapter). The AF adapter will compensate for the DSLR flange distance and will allow the use of DSLR Nikkor lenses on the new mirrorless camera.

Olympus’ E-M10 Mark III adds 4K to one of the best cameras for beginners

Olympus' OM-D series has long been one of the most popular choices among mirrorless enthusiasts, combining compact design with retro aesthetics, speedy performance, and excellent image stabilization. Now Olympus is bringing some of the best features from its premier camera to its newest entry level camera, the E-M10 Mark III.

The biggest change this time around is the addition of 4K video recording – because it's 2017 – and improved video stabilization. The previous model offered 3-axis stabilization for video; the MKIII does 5-axis. If you don't know what that means, it's basically silky smooth video on the move.

Given the E-M10 series is aimed at people making their first entry into interchangeable lens cameras, the MKIII also adds four shooting assists modes. As per Olympus' description:

When in AUTO Mode, the camera detects the shooting scene, subject, lighting, and movement of the camera and subject to automatically select the optimal settings to allow anyone to capture blur-free, pin-sharp photos, even in dimly lit indoor situations. In Scene Mode, users can touch one of six shooting environments, each displayed on the LCD monitor, to activate the ideal settings. The Advanced Photo Mode opens up users of all levels to popular photography techniques, such as nighttime Live Composite and Multiple Exposure. Bleach Bypass is a new filter in Art Filter Mode that reproduces the silver retention method used when developing film. Type I produces a glossy look, like shining silver metal, and Type II produces a nostalgic look reminiscent of old film.

Marketing speak aside, the idea is to help simplify settings for noob photographers. They can play with auto or scene modes, while dabbling with more advanced techniques like long exposures, without as much of a learning curve.

That said, more advanced photographers will appreciate practical changes like a chunkier grip and raised dials for easier control access in between shots, and a neat shortcut button to quickly access specific settings. I'm also glad Olympus now defaults to using the rear directional pad for changing settings like ISO and white balance, while still letting you easily adjust your focus point if you wish.

Otherwise, it's largely the same as its predecessor. You can shoot at 8.6 FPS, the 16MP sensor is a solid performer, and the in-body image stabilization is a godsend for video shooting static subjects in low light. The sensor may be smaller than some of the competition, but unless you're shooting action in low light, I've found Olympus' image stabilization usually compensates for it.

If you already have an E-M10 MKII, there's little reason to upgrade, and it doesn't come cheap at $650 for the body  only ($800 with the kit lens). Still, Olympus is presenting a unique combination of design, speed, portability and image quality that's hard to find. Considering Olympus is part of the most robust lens ecosystem among mirrorless cameras, the MKIII could be a worthwhile consideration for someone wetting their toes with more advanced photography.

Canon's budget mirrorless M100 gets a big sensor upgrade

Canon's M5 and other mirrorless cameras don't get the respect of Fujifilm or Sony models, perhaps because of the blah style and lack of features like 4K that users have come to expect. However, it's gradually improved the lineup and managed to increase mirrorless sales by 70 percent this year. To attract those who want to step up from smartphones, Canon has launched the M100, a replacement for the budget M10. The standout feature is a new 24.2-megapixel sensor that provides a big resolution improvement over the previous model's 18 megapixels.

Though the M100 lives at the bottom of its mirrorless lineup, the sensor is now the same as the one used on the high-end M5 and M6. Along with an updated Digic 7 processor, it allows up to 6.1 fps shooting and a 100-25,600 ISO range, decent specs for a relatively small and cheap mirrorless model. It also packs Canon's Dual Pixel focus system, which improves autofocus speed whether you're shooting stills or video. Video, is limited to 1080p, unfortunately, but at least you can shoot at 60 fps.

Other features helpful for the selfie set include a 3.0-inch, 180-degree tiltable touchscreen, HDR backlight control for tricky lighting and WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC for smartphone sharing or remote shooting. The touchscreen can be used for menu selection as well as touch focus for video. The Creative Assistant can help beginners blur out backgrounds or make a scene brighter.

The M100 is not aimed at serious photographers, but rather newbies that want to step into interchangeable lens photography with some style. Though it comes in just two colors (silver and black), there are nine optional jackets varying from red-yellow to navy-gold. The EOS M100 starts at $600 with a 15-45 mm f/3.5-6.3 lens, and runs $950 if you add a 55-22mm f/4.5-6.3 lens. If you've already got some Canon EF lenses, you can pick up the EF-M mount adapter for $200. It arrives in October, 2017.
