Sony a7S Mark II still powerful option for mirrorless fans

By Lee Min-hyung

In the mirrorless camera industry, Sony is the unmatched leader with its strong brand image and its high-end a7 series.

Sony a7S Mark II, launched in September 2015, is not the latest device, but it still generates outstanding performance shooting 4K video clips and grabbing crystal-clear images with eye-catching dynamic range. For this reason, the camera is still being named one of the best mirrorless cameras by enthusiasts here and abroad.

The device was first tested capturing images of a participant in a match against an artificial intelligence robot at a university auditorium last month.

As a non-professional photographer, this reporter had to focus on capturing clear photos without a tripod or other expert-level equipment at the bustling hall for the event packed with hundreds of people.

The device, when combined with the 24-70 millimeter G-Master lens, was heavy snapping photos continuously for hours, but its faux leather grip on the r ight side was comfortable and stable enough to take photos with one hand.

When zooming in on the participant on the stage or other target points, the a7S perfectly created wonderful shots with a very natural blurred background. The shots, when displayed on a computer screen, were satisfactory enough to explain why people would buy such a pricey premium camera, far exceeding that of other entry-level mirrorless cameras or high-end smartphones in the price range. Its autofocus speed was also impressive, enabling users to snap 2.5 frames per second in the continuous shooting mode.

Many smartphone makers have in recent years increased their quality camera output, equipping the devices with photo modes such as soft focus or vintage black-and-white.

But when transferring images to a large screen, even novice users will easily notice the difference between the Sony A7s and the camera on a high-end smartphone. The Sony flagship camera successfully captures crisp and natura l shots with dramatic contrast and blurring of their surroundings.

The difference comes from the dynamic range performance of the camera that can be used to shoot high contrast images in a balanced exposure, allowing the user to highlight a target within a shadow in a highly-natural and artistic look.

The a7S Mark II also features internal 4K movie recording, enabling users to shoot quality videos with ease. Sony's five-axis stabilization technology also plays a key part in capturing scenes more accurately. Due to its top-notch video mode, the camera is one of the best options for independent filmmakers.
