Sony introduces a new high-end lens series for its full-frame mirrorless cameras.

One of the criticisms against Sony is its relatively meagre line-up of lenses in the FE mount found on the A7 series of mirrorless full-frame cameras.

The company has finally directly addressed this issue by releasing a new range of lenses called the G Master series and the initial models in this new series are the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM standard zoom, FE 85mm f/1.4 GM and FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS telephoto zoom.

The three new lenses all feature Sony's SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor) for speedy and quiet focusing and are dust and moisture resistant.

The FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM as the standard zoom is called, is the first wide constant aperture lens featuring the FE mount – before this, Sony only had a 24-70mm f/4 constant aperture lens and a 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 for the A7 series.

Rounding out range is the FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM OSS telephoto zoom, which comes with optical image stabilisation built in.

This new flagship telephoto zoom model features XA (extreme aspherical), Super ED (extra-low dispersion) and ED glass components and Nano anti-reflective coatings, all of which contribute to better sharpness with minimal flare.

Finally, there's the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM prime lens – like the other lenses in the G Master series, Sony promises that this lens will be an impressive lens indeed.

The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM features exotic lens elements, Nano AR coating and an 11-bladed aperture for smooth out-of-focus backgrounds.

Like its telephoto zoom sibling, the 85mm f/1.4 features Nano anti-reflective coatings, an XA element as well as ED glass elements but additionally, it also has a circular 11-bladed aperture which produces smooth, rounded out-of-focus backgrounds.

No local pricing has been set at the time of writing, but to give you an idea, the price in the United States for the FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM is US$2,200 (RM8,689) while the 85mm f/1.4 GM is US$1,800 (RM7,109). The 70-200mm has not been priced as yet.

The new FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM and 85mm f/1.4 GM should be available sometime in March while the 70-200mm f/2.8 GM will be available in May.
