Surprise! CEA deems ‘Mirrorless’ the official name for mirrorless camera systems

It's taken over half a decade to sort out, but the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has officially recognized 'Mirrorless' as the industry standard name for interchangeable lens cameras without a mirror in their design.

This might not be news for those of us who have long referred to mirrorless cameras as, well, just that. But up until now, there was no single name for this particular camera design, leaving companies and consumers scrambling to come up with appropriate, albeit long-winded nomenclature.

Below are just a few of the confusing names we've seen, referring to mirrorless cameras:

  • Electronic Viewfinder with Interchangeable Lens (EVIL) [my personal favorite]
  • Compact System Cameras (CSC)
  • Interchangeable Lens Camera (ILC)
  • Mirrorless System Cameras (MSC)
  • Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM)
  • It might not be game-changing, but it will certainly help unify mirrorless camera manufacturers who have, up until now, been as fragmented with naming as possible.
